The Walsh’s old conservatory had been unused for several years. Cold and drafty, its polycarbonate roof and dwarf walls looked dated and the guttering was rotten.
The couple wanted to use the space as an open plan living area adjoined to their kitchen – a space where the family could relax and watch TV. The old conservatory and walls were taken down and the original base was utilised, meaning no messy groundworks were necessary. Using a pre-fabricated wall system, the couple were able to choose exactly where they wanted walls, windows and doors to make the most of their space. They also had the French doors removed that separated the old conservatory from the main house, creating an open plan space.
They chose a tiled roof with two full length glazed panels which let in plenty of light, but that ensured the room was warm and comfortable inside and felt like a proper extension. They also chose aluminium bi-folding doors to open up the room into the garden and a full-length corner window for even more light. Keeping full walls on either side meant the couple could wall-mount their TV and have a sofa on the opposite side for a practical use of space.
Thanks to roof and wall technology advancing in leaps and bounds over recent years, Sarah and her husband’s new structure was significantly lighter than the old conservatory it replaced, meaning the old base could easily be used. With traditional build, a new base may have been required which would have significantly increased the cost and time taken to complete the project.
