How To Prevent Condensation From Happening

Condensation is a common problem for many homeowners, but do you know what it actually is?

Condensation occurs when warm air collides with a cold surface, such as a window. Now that temperatures outdoors have started to drop, you may have already noticed condensation appear in your home. Although it isn’t something you need to worry about too much, it can be a nuisance and may lead to bigger problems in your home.

Here are 6 simple yet effective things you can do at home to help prevent condensation from happening.

  • Wipe down surfaces

If left untreated, condensation could lead to longer lasting issues, such as mould and damp. It’s best to remove condensation as soon as you notice it by drying wet surfaces with a cloth.

  • Open your windows

Keeping your home well ventilated is the key to preventing condensation. Simply opening a window will allow the warm, moist air to escape and circulate fresh air into your home.

  • Use an extractor fan

You may find condensation is more common in areas of your home where there is excessive moisture in the air, such as your bathroom and kitchen. Using an extractor fan every time you shower or cook will help to remove the moist air.

  • Turn your heating on

Controlling your heating indoors can significantly reduce the appearance of condensation in your home. You may find that keeping your heating on constantly at a low temperature is far better than keep turning it on and off.

  • Keep your internal doors closed

While you may think that keeping a door open will help the condensation to escape, it can actually allow the water vapour to spread into other rooms and so it’s best to keep doors between rooms closed.

  • Replace old windows

Old windows may not be insulating your home as well as they once used to. Installing double or triple glazed windows will help to make your home more energy efficient and significantly reduce the amount of heat that can escape.
